First 4 Things To Check If Your Furnace Isn't Working Right

If your furnace is not working properly, before you call up your local furnace repair technician, here are the four things that you need to check. Oftentimes, these simple tasks are all you need to do to get your furnace working again.

#1 Check The Settings On Your Furnace

The first thing that you need to do if your furnace is not heating up your house is go and check the setting on your thermostat. The thermostat should be set to heat. This is a good thing to check even if you are sure that you set the thermostat to the heat mode; someone else could have turned it off on purpose or on accident. This simple check can save you a lot of trouble down the road. If your furnace is turned off the heat mode for some reason, turn it onto the heat mode and give it a little time to see if that fixed the problem.

#2 Check The Switches On Your Furnace

Just like with the thermostat, sometimes the switches on your furnace can get bumped by humans or pets, and cause you to think that something is wrong with your furnace. Go down to your furnace and make sure that all the switches that control your furnace are turned to the on position.

If any of them are off, turn them to the on position. After you do this, be sure to give your furnace a little time to heat up and get to work again to see if this fixed the problem.

#3 Check Your Circuit Breaker

The next thing that you need to check is your circuit breaker. This is a good thing to check, especially if the power has been flickering at your house or if it has been a long time since you have used your furnace. The breaker on your furnace may have been turned off for some reason, which would prevent your furnace from working.

Flip the breaker back into the on position, turn on your furnace, and give it a chance to warm up to see if it is working again.

#4 Check Your Air Filter

The last thing you should check is your air filter. You should clean or replace the air filter on your furnace every few months. Failing to do so will result in a clogged and dirty air filter. A clogged and dirty air filter not only provides you with dirty air, it can actually affect the overall performance of your furnace and cause it to perform slowly. Often times, what seems like a major problem with your furnace can be solved by simply cleaning or replacing your furnace's air filter.

The next time that your furnace is not working properly, check these four easy things and make sure that one of these issues is not the culprit. If none of the above fixes work, something more serious is most likely wrong with your furnace. Call a home furnace repair tech to come out and inspect your furnace and fix the issues with it.
